Transforming the unpredictable beauty of nature into an element of design.
Over the years, as we traveled the world, we’d often come across the half-buried remnants of old trees in the fields and forests of Southeast Asia. Tangled roots and stumps, harvested long ago, and abandoned for decades. Interesting artifacts, but with little value until we found the right way to give them a new purpose.  We realized that we had overlooked an incredibly rare resource. With hard work and commitment, we were able to salvage this wood and use it to create the extraordinary Origins Collection.

Today we seek out the perfectly imperfect, turning discarded wood into astonishingly beautiful furniture. The organic curves of wood grain, the depth of a hand applied finish, the rough beauty of a natural edge: selected with an artist’s eye. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Never to be repeated and guaranteed to be uniquely yours. From Phillips Collection, naturally.
Wood Species

Wood Species

Our Origins Collection comprises various species of wood, responsibly harvested and unearthed from Northern Thailand and Indonesia.  Each type of wood we work with has specific characteristics we value.  We’re highly selective in what we bring you.  Be it the visible undulating grains, the contrasting sap lines, or the depth of the color, each piece comes with a cherished story to bring into your space.

Finishes

Finishes

We take great care in how we finish our pieces before we bring them to you. In some cases, a raw wood works best, like for some of our sculptures. Other times, we prefer to keep the look natural but add a protective coat to ensure we can make durable furniture pieces like tables and chairs. Over time, we’ve introduced new exciting finishes like our grey stone, which achieves a stone-like patina. Our “perfect brown” is a great way to add richness to the woods we source. Our discovery of charred wood inspired our burnt edge collection.

Bases

A table base is not to be overlooked! At Phillips Collection, our intention is to utilize as much of the tree and root as possible to help clear the land to make it usable again. In our travels, we find various types of tree roots that we unearth, then cut, clean out, kiln dry, and are then able to repurpose as astonishing tables. Notice how it is the buried interwoven roots that make the most interesting surfaces after they are turned over. Sometimes the parts that don’t reveal themselves turn out to be the most beautiful.

Coffee Tables

Coffee Tables
A plethora of wood species and cuts encompass our offering of Origins coffee tables. Tree trunks, roots, slabs, and off-cuts are re-imagined as functional surfaces. Here we are able to treasure the beauty of the prized teak wood root, without taking down new trees. Tamarind, chamcha, lychee and makha trees are also among the woods in this collection. Burl wood, often used on the interiors of high-end cars, is put on metal legs so that it can be a part of your client’s room. No, that does not make you better than anyone else, it just means you have a piece to not only enjoy but to also treasure.

Side Tables

Burnt Edge
One-of-a-kind doesn’t stop with our dining tables, coffee tables or consoles. At Phillips we continue to offer what nature has made with our side tables, using trunks or slices of wood on metal legs in varying heights. Here we have beautiful freeform burl wood slices as side tables.

Burl is highly prized because of its unique shape and ring patterns. It grows because the tree has experienced some sort of environmental stress or damage. Isn’t it incredible that such a stunning result can come from such a circumstance?

Consoles

Consoles
Our consoles are sourced in the same fashion as all the other Origins pieces- by working closely with artisans to carefully identify ways to maximize our use of an unearthed root or fallen tree. Together we hand select and consider the most beautiful and stable places to cut the wood to create consoles that bring two unique finished sides and remarkable conversation pieces to our customers. No two pieces are ever the same, and we love that nature gives you two styles in one piece.

Benches

Benches
A demand for organic seating has become increasingly popular, and we are glad to be able supply benches to our customers. As always, Origins doesn’t shy away from the natural state of the wood, preserving the integrity of the organic form, shape and color, while cutting the piece to be usable. Whether in a foyer, as a stand-alone piece or in combination with one of our chamcha wood slab tables, these benches are a great addition!

Sculpture

Sculpture
The roots we source are so incredible on their own that they need not simply be turned into functional furniture, but they can also stand alone as art. Mounted on bases, these one-of-a-kind natural roots are true sculptural statement pieces.

The reticulated roots can be placed in a window or used as a room divider. As with our other Origins pieces, our sculptures are finished on both sides, giving you two options and no restrictions on where you place them. There is no wrong way to install these. Just remember that no one else will have the same one you do! If that matters to you…

Mission

At Phillips Collection, we believe our job is to unearth and discover. We pay careful attention to where our products come from and have long-standing relationships with the people and trade organizations in those countries. We search for designs and pieces from Nature that stand out. Most importantly, we believe in giving back to the communities that allow us to be who we are.

In 2019 we had an amazing opportunity to partner with a local village in Northern Thailand to replant trees. Working together with the government, military, teachers, police, students and local villagers, 400 of us collaborated and each person planted 15 saplings, totaling 6000 trees in a single day! We were able to help students learn about the trees that surround them, enhancing their school curriculum in botany. In exchange for their participation, we rebuilt their playground into a safe, fun place and left them with a lesson and a connection to the beautiful world that surrounds them.
